The Design

The Proposed WWII MemorialThe design of the World War II Memorial calls for a walled sunken plaza larger than a football field, with 7 foot enclosing walls topped by 56 17-foot-high pillars and two 43-foot-high triumphal arches, all situated on a site that encompasses a 7.4-acre portion of the National Mall between the Lincoln and Washington monuments.

Construction requires the destruction -- now underway -- of the "Rainbow Pool," one of the two historic reflecting pools on the dedicated Lincoln Memorial Grounds.

When finished the structure will impede pedestrian access through this integral part of the Mall. The great vista across the Reflecting Pool toward the Lincoln Memorial will no longer be visible, since the Memorial plaza is 7 feet below grade.
