The World War II Memorial

Alternative Sites

In 1995 six potential sites for the memorial within Area I (the Mall and environs) were identified and analyzed by the American Battle Monuments Commission.

These were:

  1. Immediately west of the Capital Reflecting Pool and east of 3rd Street
  2. Northeast side of Tidal Basin near paddle boats and parking
  3. West Potomac Park between Lincoln and FDR Memorials
  4. Constitution Gardens platform area between 17th Street, Constitution Avenue, the eastern lakeshore, and the Mall Reflecting Pool
  5. Across 14th Street from the National Museum of American History
  6. Freedom Plaza on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
