The World War II Memorial
Alternative Sites
In 1995 six potential sites for the memorial within Area I (the Mall and environs) were identified and analyzed by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
These were:
- Immediately west of the Capital Reflecting Pool and east of 3rd Street
- Northeast side of Tidal Basin near paddle boats and parking
- West Potomac Park between Lincoln and FDR Memorials
- Constitution Gardens platform area between 17th Street, Constitution Avenue, the eastern lakeshore, and the Mall Reflecting Pool
- Across 14th Street from the National Museum of American History
- Freedom Plaza on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
