Park Service Extends Comment Period on Proposed Washington Monument Security Improvements

WASHINGTON, May 21, 2002 -- The National Park Service has extended the deadline for the receipt of written public comments regarding the proposed security measures at the Washington Monument.

The new deadline is the close of business on Friday, June 21, 2002. The previous deadline had been Thursday, May 23. The Park Service says it is extending the public comment time period because of requests from the general public.

"We are quite pleased and thankful for this decision," said Judy Scott Feldman, Chairman of the National Committee to Save Our Mall.

Feldman's group contends that the environmental study was inadequate and she warned that building the elaborate system of tunnels and other underground structures could disturb the water table around the monument, possibly destabilizing it.

The Park Service has prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) to analyze options for permanent security improvements at the Washington Monument in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The full text of the Environmental Assessment is available on this site or at www.nps.gov/wamo.

The Environmental Assessment details alternatives to accomplish National Park Service objectives for the design and construction of a new, permanent screening facility and vehicle barrier system.

The objectives include improvement of security, improvement of visitor flow, continuation of public use of the grounds, preservation of cultural landscape quality, improvement of accessibility, and preservation of the Monument structure and the Monument Lodge. The Environmental Assessment was prepared in cooperation with the National Capital Planning Commission.

Written public comments regarding the Environmental Assessment should be submitted to: Mr. Arnold Goldstein, Superintendent, National Capital Parks-Central, National Park Service, either via facsimile at (202) 426-1835 or via email at: NACC_Superintendent@nps.gov.
