2004 Future of The National Mall report

On January 28, 2004, the National Mall Third Century Initiative held a public forum entitled "The National Mall--The Next 100 Years: An Initiative for a Mall Conservancy" on the campus of George Washington University. It was a great success, attended by citizens and students, as well as representatives of the National Park Service, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Capital Planning Commission, Congressional staff, the Commission of Fine Arts, the Architect of the Capitol, and the federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. This public forum was followed by three well-attended workshops on May 5, 10, and 19. Some surprising and exciting ideas emerged about how the Mall could be made a more lively, enjoyable, and inspiring public space.
