September 2009What are we doing at the National Coalition to Save Our Mall?
We are a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization of historians, designers, and concerned citizens seeking a broad, visionary plan for the National Mall that recognizes the Mall’s value to all Americans as a symbol of American founding ideas, the People’s Place, and a stage for our evolving democracy. Founded in 2000, we are an all-volunteer group supported by individual donations from members across the country. We are urging Congress and the President to establish an independent, 18-month National Mall Commission to bring all constituencies to the table, including the public and District of Columbia government, to create a long-term, visionary plan for the National Mall in its 3rd century. The original visionary plan, the L’Enfant Plan of 1791 for Washington, D.C. (the 1st Century Mall) and the second visionary plan, the McMillan Commission Plan of 1902 (the 2nd Century Mall), cannot accommodate modern needs for new museums and public use. We call the future visionary plan, which includes expanding the Mall on federal land on both sides of the Potomac River, the 3rd Century Mall. We continue to develop our own visionary ideas for the future and seek support from all Americans to help us in this task. The 3rd Century Mall can be our gift to future generations.
